Welcome to Shezvan Maine Coons!

​My name is Sherry and I am the Caregiver at Shezvan. My aim is to breed  healthy, large  cats to the breed standard with amazing temperaments.   Shezvan Maine Coons is a small cattery situated in Victoria on the Mornington Peninsula. Our Cats Live with us in our home, always part of the family. The babies are born in our bedroom and when they are three weeks of age they  begin their socialisation after moving to our tv room. Here they will eventually meet all other cats and humans who are part of our family. By six or seven weeks they will have the run of the house. 

Health Information :
All our cats are DNA profiled by a veterinary genetics lab. 
We screen for the MyBPC3 Gene that is a known cause of HCM. Also  Spinal Muscular Atrophy, PK Def and PKD1. Our breeding cats are heart scanned by ultrasound by a Board Certified Cardiologist.  We x-ray and hip score when the cats are at an age recommended by our vet usually at around 18 months of age.

The Maine Coon Cat!

A forest cat, naturally occurring without any intervention from man as is the Siberian and the Norwegian forest cat. Originating from northeast America near Maine, in the mid 1800’s these large double coated cats were working cats. Not man made by breeders combining two different types of breed to make a desired yet sometimes less healthy and robust cat. 

There are many reputable Maine coon cat breeders in Victoria and indeed around Australia who are working hard to promote the health and longevity of this beautiful cat by health testing.
Sending off dna samples to genetics laboratories to determine if there are any genetic diseases present and if so not breeding from these animals.
Also conducting heart scans to look at the actual Health of the heart to check for the known heart disease,  heart cardiomyopathy or HCM. 
 X-raying the cats hips once the cat has grown sufficiently and having a specialised veterinary radiologist score the x ray to ascertain the soundness of the hips.
Hip dysplasia is also known to be genetic but there are no known dna tests for this yet so we hip X-ray and score making sure to only breed from sound animals.

All the reputable breeders I know in Melbourne and country Victoria are doing these tests and working hard to provide a happy home life for their breeding cats. Interacting with their cats, grooming them regularly and providing them with enriching environments.
Raising the kittens indoors and socialising them well before they go on to bless another home with the love and attention that only a Maine coon can give.
 
The Maine coon is quirky, dog like, intelligent and very interactive with their chosen humans. 
When introduced at a young age they can become quite the show cat.
The big gentle giant reaching up to 10-12 kgs all bathed and groomed to perfection is something to behold on the show bench. 
Victoria has a few associations that hold shows and we attend the Feline Control Council of Victoria shows. It is lovely to see all the breeds showcased in one venue. It is a great way for the general public to view the Maine coon cats and meet the breeders who are always happy to show off their much loved cats.
The shows also give the breeders a wonderful opportunity to get together, network and support each other.

 Rumplteeza Maine Coons who I purchased my very first Girl, Rumplteeza Beach Babe a beautiful blue smoke girl who is still here and in charge of all new recruits. More recently  we have Rumplteeza Tic Tac Toe who has come to impress us all especially our queens with his gentle loving purrsonality and solid good looks. 
Supercoons Maine Coons who were in Melbourne but are now in Queensland, entrusted us with a few precious girls and we were honoured to send back a girl to them. She is doing so very well and we know she is loved and cared for very much. It has been such a pleasure to work  with Shireen and we have become close. 
Sue Molloy at Thunderpaw Maine Coons is not in Victoria but is in Canberra and has recently allowed a gorgeous black smoke and white girl, Thunderpaw Xanadu to come to us, she is such a solid large female we are excited to see what she can do when put to our stunning red tabby and white boy, Sillynx High Voltage who hails all the way from Sillynx Maine coons in Italy.
Silvia in Italy has always been helpful and supportive and we are glad we chose them for our first import.
 We are also very happy to be working with Louize at Laduma Maine Coons who is breeding amazing Maine coons in country Victoria.

 Cat breeding doesn’t always go to plan and many things can go dreadfully wrong but with the friendship and support of our local, interstate and overseas breeders we are grateful to be in such good company looking forward to a bright future.
